The same solver, three other looks

Slat walls, wainscoting and shiplap all get called board and batten, and two of the three really are this layout with different numbers. Here is what each one changes, and a preset that sets the tool up for it.

Slat wall

A slat wall is board and batten with the volume turned up: narrow 1x2 battens at a 1 to 3 in gap, so the wall reads as texture rather than as panels. The math is identical, and this tool will solve it and then flag it as busy, which is correct, because that density is the point. Expect roughly four times the battens and four times the caulking of a classic 16 in layout, and cut every piece from the same board run so the grain and the color match across the wall.

Wainscoting height

Wainscoting is a height, not a different construction. Run the same battens to 38 in with a cap rail on top and you have board and batten wainscot, the traditional dining room and hallway treatment. It takes real abuse from chair backs, which is why the classic height sits just above a seat back, and why poplar or pine earns its extra cost over MDF here. Cap rail and ledge become a large share of the cost on a short wall, so price them before you commit.

Shiplap

Shiplap is the genuine outlier. It is horizontal boards that cover the entire wall with a small even reveal between them, not battens applied over drywall, so there is no spacing to solve: you size it by square footage, board coverage and a waste allowance. How to use it

  1. Measure the wall corner to corner and enter the width in feet and inches. Measure at batten height, not at the floor, because a bowed wall or a thick baseboard can lie to you by half an inch.
  2. Choose the treatment height. Full wall sizes itself from your ceiling height, three-quarter is 60 in, chair rail is 38 in, and custom takes any measurement. Anything under full height wants a cap rail on top.
  3. Pick the batten size. The tool always solves from the actual width, not the nominal name, so a 1x3 is 2 1/2 in and a 1x4 is 3 1/2 in.
  4. Decide which way to solve. Set the number of battens and read the gap, or set the gap you have in mind and read the count the wall will actually take. Most people start with a target gap of 16 in and adjust.
  5. Choose whether a batten lands in each corner. Battens at both ends is the usual look and gives N-1 bays. Turning it off puts a gap at each corner instead, which gives N+1 bays and suits a wall that runs into casing.
  6. Read the headline gap, then check the cleaner-layout note. It offers the nearest quarter-inch gap with the difference absorbed evenly by the two end bays, which is far easier to mark with a tape.
  7. Work off the mark-line table. It lists the left edge and the center of every batten measured from the same corner, so you never chain measurements and never accumulate error.
  8. For a whole room, switch to room mode and add each wall by name and width. One shared rhythm is held across all of them, and you can force the interior gap to match exactly and let the end bays absorb the difference.
  9. For a square grid, switch to grid mode. Set the columns, then let the rows chase near-square cells or set them yourself. Verticals run full height in one piece and horizontals are cut to fit between them.
  10. Set your material tier and stock length, then walk the cost ledger. Every price is editable, labor is an optional per-square-foot line, and the total is a planning number for your own budgeting.

How the math works

Everything comes from two formulas you can check on paper. With a batten in each corner, N battens leave N-1 bays, so the gap is (W - N x b) / (N - 1), where W is the wall width and b is the ACTUAL batten width. With a gap in each corner instead, N battens leave N+1 bays and the gap is (W - N x b) / (N + 1). Solving the other direction from a target gap s, the count is round((W + s) / (b + s)) for battens at the ends and round((W - s) / (b + s)) for gaps at the ends, and the tool then recomputes the real gap at that whole count, because a wall almost never divides evenly. On-center spacing is simply gap + b. Mark lines are built from the exact decimal gap and only rounded for display, so error never accumulates down the wall: batten i sits at i x (b + gap) from the left corner, and the last batten lands exactly at W - b. The cleaner-layout suggestion rounds the gap to the nearest 1/4 inch, holds the interior bays at that round number, and splits the remainder between the two end bays: end bay = (W - N x b - interior bays x rounded gap) / 2. Grid mode runs the same solver twice, once across the width for the verticals and once down the height for the horizontals, and the near-square option scans row counts for the one whose cell height lands closest to the cell width. Materials follow the layout. Batten linear feet are the count times the cut length, and the cut plan fits floor(stock length / batten length) pieces into each board and rounds the board count up, so the leftover is real and visible. Cap rail and ledge run the wall width and are counted per wall, since a mid-wall joint in a cap rail is the joint everyone sees. Consumables follow the installed run: one 10 oz tube of adhesive per about 64 linear feet of batten, caulk at two joints per batten plus the rail joints at about 45 linear feet per tube, and 18 ga brads at about 2 per linear foot with 1,000 to a box. Paint is (wall area minus openings) x 1.10 for batten relief x coats, divided by 350 sq ft per gallon, rounded up to the next quart, with three quarts swapped for a gallon because a gallon costs less. Openings reduce paint, caulk, adhesive and nails, but never the board count, because battens are cut around an opening from whole boards you still have to buy. Cost is each quantity times a price you can edit, plus an optional labor rate per square foot of treated wall.

  1. 1. Measure the wall, and use the actual batten width

    Measure corner to corner at roughly the height the battens will run, not along the floor. Then look up what your board really measures: nominal lumber is smaller than its name, so a 1x2 is 1 1/2 in, a 1x3 is 2 1/2 in, a 1x4 is 3 1/2 in and a 1x6 is 5 1/2 in. Using 3 in for a 1x3 across eight battens throws the layout off by 4 inches, which is exactly how a wall ends up with a fat bay in one corner. On a 12 ft wall that is 144 in of run and 8 battens of 1x3 eat 8 x 2.5 = 20 in of it.

  2. 2. Choose which end condition you want

    A batten in each corner is the standard look and it frames the wall: N battens then leave N-1 bays between them. If you would rather the corners read as open wall, put a gap at each end instead and the same N battens leave N+1 bays. The choice changes the math, not just the appearance, and it is the second most common reason a hand-drawn layout does not close out. On the 12 ft wall with 8 battens of 1x3, battens at the ends give a 17 11/16 in gap, while gaps at the ends give 13 3/4 in.

  3. 3. Solve the gap, or solve the count

    From a count: gap = (144 - 20) / 7 = 17.714 in, which is 17 11/16 in at the nearest sixteenth, and on-center is 17.714 + 2.5 = 20.214 in, or 20 3/16 in. From a target gap instead, say 16 in: N = round((144 + 16) / (2.5 + 16)) = round(8.65) = 9 battens, and the real gap at 9 battens is (144 - 22.5) / 8 = 15 3/16 in. Notice it is not 16. The count has to be a whole number, so the honest answer is the gap the wall actually gives you, which is why this tool always recomputes and prints it rather than repeating your target back at you.

  4. 4. Take the cleaner layout if you want a friendlier tape reading

    17 11/16 in is correct but nobody enjoys marking it. Round the gap to the nearest quarter inch, 17 3/4 in, hold the five interior bays at that number, and let the two end bays absorb the difference: (144 - 20 - 5 x 17.75) / 2 = 17 5/8 in each. The eye cannot see a 1/8 in difference in a bay 17 in wide, but your tape and your patience will notice the difference at the mark. Both layouts are offered because both are legitimate; on a wall with strong raking light, the perfectly even version is the safer choice.

  5. 5. Mark from one corner, never batten to batten

    The mark-line table gives the left edge and the center of every batten measured from the same corner: 0, 20 3/16, 40 7/16, 60 5/8, 80 7/8, 101 1/16, 121 5/16, 141 1/2. Hook the tape once and mark them all. Measuring batten to batten instead compounds every rounding error, and by the eighth batten a 1/16 in slip eight times over is a half inch of drift you only discover when the last board will not sit against the corner.

  6. 6. Turn the layout into a shopping list

    Eight battens at 96 in each is 64 linear feet. An 8 ft board yields exactly one 96 in batten, so that is 8 boards with no offcut. Drop to a 60 in half wall and a 10 ft board yields two battens with nothing left over, which is why the stock length matters more than people expect. Then the consumables follow the run: 64 lf needs 1 tube of adhesive, 128 lf of caulk joints needs 3 tubes, 128 brads is one box, and 96 sq ft at 1.10 relief over two coats is 211 sq ft of coverage, which is 1 gallon of paint.

Bedroom feature wall, full height, one Saturday

A 12 ft wide bedroom wall with an 8 ft ceiling gets full-height board and batten in 1x3 primed MDF, eight battens, battens landing in both corners.

  1. Wall run 12 ft = 144 in. Eight 1x3 battens at 2 1/2 in actual take up 8 x 2.5 = 20 in.
  2. Gap = (144 - 20) / 7 = 17.714 in = 17 11/16 in. On-center = 20 3/16 in.
  3. Mark lines from the left corner: 0, 20 3/16, 40 7/16, 60 5/8, 80 7/8, 101 1/16, 121 5/16, 141 1/2 in.
  4. Battens: 8 pieces at 96 in = 64 lf. An 8 ft board gives exactly one, so 8 boards at $11 = $88.
  5. Consumables: 1 tube of adhesive ($7), 3 tubes of caulk ($15), 1 box of brads ($9), 1 tub of filler ($8).
  6. Paint: 96 sq ft x 1.10 relief x 2 coats = 211 sq ft, over 350 sq ft per gallon = 1 gallon at $45.
  7. Materials total $172, which is $1.79 per square foot of wall.

Takeaway. A full-height accent wall is a genuinely cheap room transformation: under $200 in materials and one weekend. The expensive part is the finish work, not the boards, so budget your patience for filling nail holes and caulking both edges of all eight battens.

Half wall in a hallway, cap rail and ledge, from a target gap

A 10 ft 6 in hallway wall gets a 60 in three-quarter treatment in primed pine, capped with a 1x4 rail and a 1x2 ledge, working from a target gap of about 16 in.

  1. Wall run 126 in. From the target: N = round((126 + 16) / (2.5 + 16)) = round(7.68) = 8 battens.
  2. Real gap at 8 battens = (126 - 20) / 7 = 15.143 in = 15 1/8 in, not the 16 in asked for. On-center 17 5/8 in.
  3. Battens: 8 pieces at 60 in. A 10 ft board yields exactly two, so 4 boards at $18.75 = $75, zero offcut.
  4. Cap rail: 10.5 lf, and because a mid-wall joint would show, that is 2 boards of 10 ft at $23.75 = $47.50. The ledge is another 2 boards of 1x2 at $13.75 = $27.50.
  5. Installed run is 40 lf of batten plus 21 lf of rail and ledge = 61 lf: 1 tube of adhesive, 3 tubes of caulk, 1 box of brads.
  6. Paint: 52.5 sq ft x 1.10 x 2 coats = 115 sq ft, which is 2 quarts, not a gallon.
  7. Materials total $227, or $4.32 per square foot of treated wall.

Takeaway. A half wall costs more per square foot than a full wall, because the cap rail and ledge are a large share of a small area. It also shows why the stock length is a real decision: 10 ft boards cut two 60 in battens with nothing left, while 8 ft boards would have wasted 36 in on every single one.

Dining room grid, six columns by four rows

A 13 ft wide dining room wall with a 9 ft ceiling gets a square board and batten grid in 1x2 primed MDF, six columns and four rows, cut from 10 ft stock.

  1. Verticals across 156 in: gap = (156 - 6 x 1.5) / 5 = 29.4 in = 29 3/8 in.
  2. Horizontals down 108 in: gap = (108 - 4 x 1.5) / 3 = 34 in. Cells read 29 3/8 in by 34 in, close enough to square to look deliberate.
  3. Verticals run full height in one piece: 6 at 108 in = 54 lf, one per 10 ft board = 6 boards.
  4. Horizontals are cut between the verticals: 4 rows x 5 bays = 20 pieces at 29 3/8 in. Four fit in a 10 ft board, so 5 boards. Total 11 boards at $10 = $110.
  5. Installed run 103 lf: 2 tubes of adhesive, 206 lf of caulk joints = 5 tubes, 1 box of brads.
  6. Paint: 117 sq ft x 1.10 x 2 coats = 257 sq ft = 1 gallon.
  7. Materials total $211, or $1.80 per square foot.

Takeaway. A grid roughly doubles the caulk and the cutting compared with plain vertical battens on the same wall, but barely moves the board count, because the horizontals come out of the offcuts. Decide the cell proportion before you cut: 29 by 34 reads square from across the room, while anything past about a 1.6 ratio starts to read as stripes.

The judgement calls a pro makes

Decisions the tool cannot make for you, and how someone who does this for a living thinks them through.

MDF, primed pine, poplar or PVC
Primed MDF is the cheapest and the flattest, takes paint beautifully and has no grain to telegraph, which is why most accent walls you have seen online are MDF. Its one weakness is decisive: it swells permanently if it gets wet, so it does not belong in a bathroom, a laundry, a mudroom, or against an exterior wall that sweats. Primed finger-jointed pine costs roughly 35 percent more and tolerates damp and knocks far better. Poplar is a hardwood with crisp edges and no knots, worth it if you want sharp arrises on a chair rail, but it comes raw so add a priming coat. PVC trim is waterproof, will never rot, and is the only one of the four to use in a shower room or around a tub. Match the material to the room's humidity first and the budget second.
Keep the baseboard or pull it off
Pulling the baseboard and running battens to the floor gives the cleanest, most built-in look, and it is what makes a wall read as millwork instead of applied trim. It also means repairing drywall paper where the baseboard was glued, and reinstalling a taller baseboard afterwards so the battens die into it. Keeping the existing baseboard and landing the battens on top of it is far faster and perfectly acceptable, especially with a chunky modern baseboard, and it is the right call in a rental or a room where the floor is not level. If you keep it, set the baseboard deduction in the materials card so your cut list is right, and check the baseboard's projection: a batten thinner than the baseboard leaves a step you will need to fill or cap.
Battens in the corners, or gaps in the corners
A batten hard in each corner frames the wall and is the safer default, especially where two treated walls meet, because the two battens can be scribed together. Gaps at the ends read lighter and are the better choice when the wall runs into door casing or a window return, since a batten crowded against a casing looks like a mistake even when it is deliberate. The tool switches the formula for you, but decide this before you cut: it changes both the gap and the count, and the two layouts are not interchangeable on the same wall.
How wide the gap should be
Classic board and batten sits between 12 and 24 in, and 16 in is the sweet spot most people land on because it reads balanced at normal room distances and it lines up with standard stud spacing on many walls. Under 12 in the wall starts to feel busy and the caulking work climbs sharply; under about 4 in you are building a slat wall, which is a different, legitimate style with its own rules. Over about 24 in the rhythm dissolves and the battens read as a few random stripes rather than a system. Also let the room set it: a 9 ft ceiling can carry wider bays than an 8 ft one, and a narrow hallway wants a tighter rhythm than a broad living room wall.
Adhesive plus brads, or chase the studs
Construction adhesive plus 18 ga brads into the drywall holds a lightweight batten permanently, and it is what makes the layout possible at all, because if you had to hit a stud with every batten your gap would be dictated by framing rather than design. Use a thin zigzag bead, not a fat rope, or the adhesive will squeeze out at the edges and interfere with your caulk line. Chase studs only for a cap rail or a ledge that will take real weight or a leaning arm. Do check for wiring and plumbing before you shoot brads anywhere near a switch, an outlet or a wet wall.
Outlets, switches and window casings
An outlet in a bay is fine. An outlet under a batten is a problem, so nudge the whole layout an inch rather than notching a board around a plate. Once battens and a cap rail add thickness to the wall, the box sits too deep for code, and the fix is a plastic outlet extender, which costs almost nothing and takes a minute per box. At a window or door, stop the battens against the casing rather than running them behind it, and treat the wall on each side as its own run if the casing splits it: a rhythm that continues visually across a window but is measured as one wall will look wrong on both sides.
Full height or a partial-height treatment
Full height suits a bedroom feature wall, a stairwell, and any room where you want the wall itself to become the feature; it is also the cheapest per square foot because there is no cap rail. Three-quarter at 60 in is the current favourite for living rooms and entryways: tall enough to be a statement, short enough to leave art space above. Chair rail at 38 in is the traditional dining-room and hallway height and it takes real abuse from chairs. In a bathroom, 38 to 48 in keeps the boards away from splash zones. One rule holds for all of them: any partial height needs a cap rail on top, or the battens end in mid-air.

Common mistakes, and the fix

  • Dividing the wall width by the number of gaps and forgetting the battens have width.

    The battens occupy real wall: eight 1x3s take up 20 in of a 144 in wall before you space anything. Always subtract N x b from the width first, then divide by the number of bays. Skipping that step gives a gap about 2 1/2 in too wide on this wall, which puts the last batten well past the corner.

  • Using nominal sizes instead of actual sizes in the math.

    A 1x3 is 2 1/2 in, not 3 in. A 1x4 is 3 1/2 in. The difference is half an inch per batten, and across eight battens it is a full 4 in of drift. Measure one of your actual boards with a tape before you commit, especially if you bought "1x3" from a place that mills its own trim.

  • Chaining the measurements batten to batten across the wall.

    Mark every batten from the same corner using the mark-line table. Chained measurements compound rounding: eight marks each 1/16 in off the same way is half an inch of drift by the far corner, and you will not notice until the last board fights the wall.

  • Uneven end bays that nobody planned.

    If you round the gap for convenience, split the leftover evenly between the two end bays instead of dumping it all into the last one. The tool's cleaner-layout note does the arithmetic. One fat corner bay is the single most visible flaw in an otherwise good wall, because the eye reads the corners first.

  • Brads too short to hold through the board plus the drywall.

    A 3/4 in board over 1/2 in drywall needs at least 1 1/2 in brads to reach anything, and 2 in is better where you catch framing. Short brads plus adhesive feel fine on day one and pop as the boards move seasonally. The adhesive does the real holding; the brads are clamps while it cures.

  • Painting before the filling and caulking is finished.

    The finish IS the caulk work. Fill every nail hole, sand it flush, then caulk both long edges of every batten and every rail joint, tooled with a wet finger. On the reference wall that is 128 linear feet of caulk joint for eight battens, which takes far longer than putting the boards up. Paint first and every hole and seam will be framed by the paint instead of hidden by it.

  • Ignoring heavy wall texture behind the battens.

    Orange peel or knockdown telegraphs badly between battens under raking light, and it also stops the boards sitting flat. On a lightly textured wall, skim the batten lines and sand. On a heavy texture, skim the whole wall or accept the look before you buy 8 boards. A quick test: shine a work light along the wall at a low angle and look at what appears.

Material and unit specifics

Nominal versus actual size
Lumber is named before it is dried and planed, so the number on the label is not the number on your tape. A 1x2 measures 3/4 in by 1 1/2 in, a 1x3 is 3/4 by 2 1/2, a 1x4 is 3/4 by 3 1/2 and a 1x6 is 3/4 by 5 1/2. Only the actual width matters to the spacing math, which is why the batten picker prints both. Some suppliers also sell true one-inch or milled trim stock, so measure a board before you cut a whole wall to a number you assumed.
Stock lengths, and why they decide your waste
Boards come in 8, 10 and 12 ft. The right one is whatever divides cleanly into your batten length: 96 in battens take exactly one 8 ft board each, 60 in battens take two from a 10 ft board with nothing left, and 38 in chair-rail battens take three from a 10 ft board or two from an 8 ft. Choose the stock length after you know the batten length, not before, and the cut plan on this page shows the leftover for each choice so you can compare in seconds.
Primed versus raw stock
Pre-primed MDF and finger-jointed pine arrive with a factory coat, which saves a full priming day and gives a better final finish than most brushed-on primer. Raw poplar and raw pine cost less per board but need a coat of primer before the two topcoats, and the sanding between coats is where the time really goes. Whichever you use, prime every cut end: an unsealed MDF end drinks paint and swells at the first hint of moisture.
Cutting MDF, and the dust
MDF cuts glass-smooth with a fine-tooth blade and needs almost no sanding, which is a large part of its appeal. It also throws an extraordinarily fine dust loaded with binder, so cut outdoors or with real extraction and wear a proper respirator, not a paper mask. It has no grain, so it will not split near an end, but it also has little holding power for a brad near an edge: keep fasteners at least 1/2 in from the ends.
2026 retail price bands per 8 ft board
As a planning range at the big boxes: primed MDF 1x3 runs about $9 to $13, primed pine 1x3 about $13 to $18, poplar 1x3 about $16 to $20, and PVC trim 1x3 about $20 to $25. A 10 oz tube of construction adhesive is $6 to $8, paintable latex caulk $4 to $6, a box of 18 ga brads about $9, and quality interior wall paint $35 to $60 a gallon. Cap rail and ledge on a partial-height wall
A partial-height treatment needs something on top. The usual detail is a 1x4 laid flat as a cap rail with its face out, optionally with a 1x2 ledge under it to create a small shelf and a shadow line. Both run the full wall width, and both should be one continuous piece per wall where possible, since a scarf joint mid-run is visible forever at eye level. That is why this tool counts rail boards per wall rather than dividing one total run by the stock length.
Caulk, filler and the finish
Use lightweight spackle or wood filler for nail holes, and a paintable siliconized latex caulk for the long edges. They are not interchangeable: filler sands, caulk does not, and a sanded caulk joint stays rough forever. Budget two caulk joints per batten plus the rail joints, at about 45 linear feet per 10 oz tube. On a full-height eight-batten wall that is 3 tubes, and it is normal to use more than you expect on the first wall you ever do.

Reading your result

The gap is the number the wall is judged by, and it is printed both as a decimal and as the nearest 1/16 in because those serve different moments: the decimal is the exact math, the fraction is what you can actually find on a tape. Sixteenths matter here more than people assume: caulk hides a 1/16 in discrepancy without a trace, and hides nothing at 1/2 in, so a layout that is right to the sixteenth will look machine-made after painting while one that is off by half an inch in a corner will stay visibly wrong forever. On-center is the same layout measured a different way, useful when you would rather mark centerlines with a laser than edges with a pencil. The mark-line table is the artifact to work from: every figure is measured from the same corner, so hook the tape once, mark them all, then draw each line with a level rather than a square, because very few walls and almost no floors are actually plumb. When the tool warns that a gap is busy or sparse, it is a style note, not an error: under 4 in is a slat wall and over 36 in stops reading as a system, but both are real looks if that is what you want. Read the cost total the way you would read a shopping list you wrote yourself: it is your quantities at your prices, which is exactly what makes it useful for deciding between MDF and PVC or between one wall and a whole room, and exactly why it is not a quote.

Limitations

  • Interior decorative work only. This is not structural, and it is not exterior siding: for board and batten cladding on the outside of a house, with sheets, furring and weather detailing, use the siding calculator instead.
  • Flat, rectangular walls. Sloped ceilings, stairwell rakes, curved walls and bump-outs need the wall broken into rectangles you enter separately, or a hand layout.
  • Openings reduce paint, caulk, adhesive and nails, but not the board count, because battens are cut around an opening from whole boards. The layout decision on an interrupted wall, whether the rhythm continues across a window or restarts on each side, is yours to make.
  • The cut plan assumes clean crosscuts from one stock length at a time and does not optimize offcuts between different piece lengths beyond the groups it shows.
  • Prices are editable planning defaults from 2026 big-box ranges, not live quotes. Regional spreads on trim boards and paint are wide, and the optional labor line is only ever as good as the rate you type into it.
  • Imperial units only, in feet and inches. There is no metric mode, consistent with the rest of the site.
  • The tool sizes materials; it does not check for wiring, plumbing or blocking behind the drywall. Locate those yourself before any fastener goes in.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should board and batten battens be?
Classic board and batten runs 12 to 24 in between battens, and 16 in is the most common answer because it reads balanced at normal viewing distance and often lines up with stud spacing. Tighter than 12 in starts to feel busy and roughly doubles your caulking time; wider than 24 in and the battens stop reading as a rhythm. Let the wall decide within that band: a tall 9 ft wall carries wider bays than an 8 ft one, and a narrow hallway suits a tighter spacing. The important part is that every bay is equal, which is what this calculator solves. On a 12 ft wall, 8 battens of 1x3 land at 17 11/16 in and 9 battens land at 15 3/16 in, so pick the count whose gap you like and the layout follows.
What size boards do I use for board and batten?
Battens are usually 1x2, 1x3 or 1x4, and remember those measure 1 1/2, 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 in. 1x3 is the most popular for an interior accent wall: substantial enough to cast a real shadow line, narrow enough that 8 or 9 of them fit a normal wall comfortably. 1x2 suits grids and slat-style walls where you want many lines without the wall getting heavy, and 1x4 suits tall rooms or a bolder, more traditional look with fewer battens. For the cap rail on a partial-height wall, a 1x4 laid flat is standard, often with a 1x2 ledge beneath it. All of them are 3/4 in thick, which is the projection off the wall.
How much does a board and batten accent wall cost?
For materials only, a full-height 12 ft wall in primed MDF with 8 battens comes to roughly $172: $88 of boards, $7 adhesive, $15 caulk, $9 brads, $8 filler and $45 for a gallon of paint. That is about $1.79 per square foot of wall. Stepping up to primed pine adds roughly 35 percent to the board line, and PVC roughly doubles it. A partial-height wall costs more per square foot, around $4.30 in the worked example, because the cap rail and ledge are a big share of a small area. Hiring the work out typically adds $3 to $8 per square foot depending on your market and the finish level. Every price on this page is editable, so put your own numbers in rather than trusting a national average.
Can I do board and batten in a bathroom?
Yes, but not in MDF. MDF swells permanently once it takes on water and a bathroom will find every unsealed edge, so use PVC trim in any splash zone and primed pine or poplar elsewhere in the room. Keep the treatment to chair-rail or three-quarter height rather than full height so the boards stay clear of the shower surround, prime every cut end, and caulk the bottom edge to the baseboard as well as the sides so water cannot wick underneath. As an example, an 8 ft bathroom wall at 38 in in PVC with a cap rail takes 6 battens at a 16 3/16 in gap and lands near $147 in materials. Run the exhaust fan while it cures, and give the paint a full week before the room sees regular steam.
Is board and batten the same as shiplap, slat wall or wainscoting?
They are cousins, and this one calculator handles all of them because the underlying math is the same. Board and batten is vertical battens applied over a flat wall on a regular spacing. A slat wall is the same idea with narrow battens at small gaps, typically 1x2 at a 1 to 3 in gap, which this page will solve and then flag as busy, correctly, since that is the intended look. Wainscoting is a height rather than a style: run the same battens at the 38 in chair-rail preset with a cap rail and you have board and batten wainscot.
