Why these tools exist

Estimating materials is where a home project quietly goes wrong. Buy too little tile and the job stops halfway while you chase a second order that may not even match the first. Buy too much and the money sits in a garage. Most of the calculators online give you a bare coverage figure and leave out the parts that actually decide what you carry to the till: the grout joint, the waste factor for your pattern, the jump from loose tiles to whole boxes, and the leftovers you keep for repairs. Materialwright exists to close that gap with tools that estimate a job the way a tradesperson would.

Who is behind it

Materialwright is a small independent project, not a marketplace or a lead-generation front for contractors. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to buy here. The name is a nod to the old trades: a wheelwright made wheels, a shipwright made ships, and a materialwright helps you work out the materials. That is the whole remit. We build one calculator at a time and only publish it when the math holds up and the page is genuinely useful.

How each tool is built and verified

Every calculator runs entirely in your browser. The formulas are plain arithmetic, written out in the open on each tool's page under How the math works, so you never have to trust a black box: you can follow the working and check it against your own figures. The core math for each tool is covered by automated tests that run before anything ships, using the same worked examples you see on the page, so the number in the tool and the number in the example are produced by the same code.

We hold each page to a real quality bar. A tool is not just a calculator; it carries the full method with worked numbers, several end-to-end scenarios, the judgement calls a pro makes, the common mistakes and their fixes, and the material and unit specifics that trip people up. If a page cannot be made genuinely useful, it does not go up.

What these tools are not

They are estimates, not quotes. A calculator here does not know your exact product, your supplier's box counts, your local labor rates, or the dye lot on the pallet. It gives you a sound, checkable figure to plan and budget with, and every tool is clear about where its estimate ends and a real quote begins. Prices are always the ones you enter, so the cost side is only as good as the numbers you feed it.
