Decisions the tool cannot make for you, and how someone who does this
for a living thinks them through.
- Hot mix, millings, or gravel for a rural drive
- The three fill the same trench at very different price and quality points. Hot mix is the smooth, sealed, low-maintenance surface at $100 to $200 per ton delivered. Millings are recycled asphalt at roughly $10 to $30 per ton that compact into a firm, semi-bound surface but never look or shed water like new hot mix, and they want heavy rolling and summer heat to set. Crushed gravel is cheaper still and needs regrading every year or two. For a short residential drive that fronts the street, hot mix usually wins on resale and upkeep; for a long farm or field access drive, millings or gravel often make more sense. The tool prices all three so the tradeoff is dollars, not guesswork.
- Full-depth build versus an overlay
- If the existing base is sound and the old surface is just tired, a 1.5 to 2 in overlay reuses that base and costs a fraction of a rebuild, which is why the overlay preset turns the base off. But an overlay over a failing base, alligator cracking, or standing-water spots just telegraphs the failure through the new lift within a season. Overlay when the base is solid and the problem is surface wear; go full-depth when the base is pumping, rutted, or was never built right. When in doubt, a contractor coring the drive settles it faster than any calculator.
- Trusting the supplier's density over the 145 default
- The 145 lb per cubic foot figure is the NAPA-standard planning number, but a specific mix design and aggregate can run anywhere from 140 to 156, and on a big order that spread moves the tonnage by several tons. Before a large purchase, ask the plant for the compacted unit weight of the exact mix and enter it in the density field. For millings the variation is wider still, because the source and screening change the packed weight; treat 120 as a starting point and confirm.
- Whether to sealcoat a brand-new driveway
- Sealer protects asphalt, but a new driveway needs to cure first, usually 6 to 12 months, so the light oils flash off and the surface hardens; sealing too early traps them and can leave a soft, tacky finish. On a new lay, leave sealcoat off in the tool and plan the first coat for the following year. On an existing or already-cured drive, two coats every few years is the usual maintenance rhythm, and that is when the pail count matters.
- Sizing the truck to the site, not just the tonnage
- A 20-ton tri-axle is the cheapest way to move asphalt per ton, but it is a big, heavy vehicle that cannot back up a narrow drive, swing a tight gate, or cross a soft lawn without leaving ruts. If access is tight, a 10-ton or a 5-ton single axle costs more per ton but actually reaches the work, and hot mix cools on the truck, so the delivery has to keep up with the crew. The remainder line helps here: if you are one ton into a second big load, a single smaller truck may be the cheaper and easier call.
