How to use it

  1. Pick the area mode that matches what you have. Know the house footprint from county records or a tape measure? Use footprint and pitch, and the tool applies the pitch factor.   2. Set the pitch. In footprint mode it converts the flat footprint to the true sloped surface; in every mode it drives the code checks, like the double underlayment band. Not sure of your pitch? Measure it with the roof pitch calculator and come back.
  3. Choose the roof complexity so the waste is honest: 10 percent for a simple gable, 15 for a hip roof or a valley or two, 20 for a cut-up roof with dormers. The percentage stays editable if you know better.
  4. Pick the field material: architectural shingles (the default, 3 bundles per square), 3-tab, or metal panels with your panel coverage width and eave-to-ridge length.

At a glance

How the math works

Every number on the page comes from a formula you can check by hand. Roof surface: in footprint mode it is the footprint area times the pitch factor, where the factor is sqrt(144 + x squared) / 12 for an x/12 pitch (1.0541 at 4/12, 1.1180 at 6/12, 1.2019 at 8/12; the full multiplier table lives on the roof pitch calculator). In direct and plane modes the surface is what you measured, so no factor is applied. Squares: the surface divided by 100, because a roofing square is 100 sq ft. Waste-adjusted squares: squares times one plus the waste percentage. Shingle bundles: the adjusted squares times 3 bundles per square, rounded up to a whole bundle. Underlayment rolls: adjusted squares times the layer count, divided by the roll coverage (synthetic about 10 squares, #15 felt 4, #30 felt 2), rounded up; the layer count is 2 when the pitch is 2/12 to under 4/12 with asphalt shingles (2021 IRC R905.1.1), otherwise 1. Starter strip: eave plus rake length divided by about 105 lf per bundle, rounded up. Drip edge: eave plus rake divided by 10 ft sticks, rounded up. Ridge cap: ridge and hip length divided by about 25 lf per bundle, rounded up. Ice and water shield: eave length divided by a 65 lf roll, rounded up.   1. 1. Get the roof surface from the footprint and pitch

    The footprint is the horizontal area the roof covers, eaves included; county records and listing sites usually carry it, or measure length times width at the ground. Shingles lie on the slope, so the footprint must grow by the pitch factor: sqrt(144 + x squared) / 12 for an x/12 pitch. Worked: a 1,600 sq ft footprint at 6/12 is 1,600 x 1.1180 = 1,789 sq ft of actual roof. Skip the factor and you order 10 to 40 percent short, which is the single most common roofing order mistake.   2. 2. Convert to squares and add honest waste

    Divide by 100: 1,789 sq ft is 17.9 squares, the unit every quote, bundle wrapper, and scope sheet uses. Then add waste for cuts, ridge starts, and mistakes: 10 percent on a simple gable, 15 with hips or a valley or two, 20 on a cut-up roof with dormers. Here 17.9 x 1.10 = 19.7 waste-adjusted squares. Waste is not padding: every hip and valley cuts shingles at an angle and the offcuts often cannot be reused, so a complex roof genuinely consumes more material than its area.

  3. 3. Turn squares into bundles and rolls

    Standard 3-tab and most architectural shingles run 3 bundles per square, so the order is ceil(19.7 x 3) = 60 bundles; the tool always rounds up to whole bundles and shows the leftover coverage. Underlayment follows the same adjusted squares: synthetic covers about 10 squares per roll, so ceil(19.7 / 10) = 2 rolls. On a 2/12 to under 4/12 shingle roof the IRC requires two underlayment layers (R905.1.1), and the tool doubles the roll count and says why.

  4. 4. Measure the edges for the accessory rows

    Starter strip, drip edge, ridge cap, and ice and water shield are LINEAR items driven by edge lengths, not area, which is why waste never applies to them. Walk the eaves (the horizontal bottom edges) and rakes (the sloped gable edges) with a tape or measure them off plans: starter runs eaves plus rakes at about 105 lf per bundle, drip edge covers the same edges in 10 ft sticks, ridge cap covers the ridge and hips at about 25 lf per bundle, and ice and water shield protects the eaves at about 65 lf per 3 ft roll.   5. 5. Price it line by line, then sanity-check quotes

    Every count meets an editable unit price: bundles around $42, synthetic rolls near $95, starter, ridge cap, drip edge, ice and water, and nails all itemized. Materials for the 60-bundle example land near $3,100 at the defaults. Add labor as a per-square rate if you want an installed figure: asphalt install commonly runs $350 to $600 or more per square depending on region, tear-off, stories, and pitch, and tear-off with disposal adds its own per-square line. Ranch reshingle, budgeted from county records

A homeowner is pricing a reroof on a 1,400 sq ft single-story ranch with a simple 4/12 gable roof, 140 lf of eaves, and cold winters, and wants a materials budget before calling anyone.

  1. Footprint 1,400 sq ft at 4/12: factor sqrt(144 + 16) / 12 = 1.0541, so 1,400 x 1.0541 = 1,476 sq ft of roof.
  2. Squares: 1,476 / 100 = 14.8. Simple gable, so 10% waste: 14.8 x 1.10 = 16.2 adjusted squares.
  3. Bundles: ceil(16.2 x 3) = 49 bundles of architectural shingles.
  4. Underlayment: at 4/12 a single synthetic layer is fine (the double-layer band ends just under 4/12): ceil(16.2 / 10) = 2 rolls.
  5. Ice and water at the eaves for ice damming: ceil(140 / 65) = 3 rolls, plus drip edge and starter from the measured eave and rake lengths.
  6. Ledger at default prices: 49 bundles about $2,058, plus rolls, starter, ridge cap, drip edge, ice and water and nails, landing near $2,900 in materials; adding labor at a quoted $425 per square puts the installed picture near $9,800.

Takeaway. A footprint from public records plus a pitch measured from the attic gets a defensible materials budget in minutes. When the roofer's bid arrives, check its square count against yours before anything else: if the bid says 20 squares for this roof, the conversation starts there.

Checking a contractor quote and an insurance scope sheet

After a hail claim, the insurance scope sheet says 24 squares for a 1,750 sq ft footprint hip-roof house at 8/12, and the homeowner wants to verify the number is fair. This is arithmetic only, not claims advice.

  1. Footprint 1,750 sq ft at 8/12: factor sqrt(144 + 64) / 12 = 1.2019, so 1,750 x 1.2019 = 2,103 sq ft.
  2. Squares: 21.0. A hip roof cuts more, so 15% waste: 21.0 x 1.15 = 24.2 adjusted squares.
  3. The sheet's 24 squares sits right on the computed 24.2: the number is fair.
  4. If the sheet had said 30 squares, or 18, the same two lines of math would be the polite question to ask the adjuster or the contractor.

Takeaway. Adjusters and estimating software work from the same footprint-times-factor-plus-waste arithmetic this page shows. Being able to reproduce the square count turns a take-it-or-leave-it number into something you can verify in two minutes, and that is true for bids as well as claims.

Metal roof on a backyard shed

A 12 x 16 ft shed gets a 3/12 shed-style roof in exposed-fastener metal panels with 36 in of net coverage, panels cut to run eave to ridge.

  1. Footprint 12 x 16 = 192 sq ft at 3/12: factor sqrt(144 + 9) / 12 = 1.0308, so 192 x 1.0308 = 198 sq ft of roof.
  2. Squares 1.98; with 10% waste, 2.2 adjusted squares.
  3. Eave-to-ridge panel length about 6.2 ft along the slope; each 36 in panel covers 3 x 6.2 = 18.6 sq ft, so ceil(218 / 18.6) = 12 panels.
  4. Screws: about 80 per square x 2.2 = 175, so one 250-count bag.
  5. The 3/12 pitch matters: lapped panels without sealed seams need 3/12 as the IRC minimum, so this design just clears it; anything shallower means sealed laps or standing seam.

Takeaway. Metal changes the buy unit from bundles to panels, and the panel length is a real decision: order panels cut to the eave-to-ridge length so the roof has no horizontal laps. The pitch minimum for the panel profile is part of the material choice, not an afterthought.

The judgement calls a pro makes

Decisions the tool cannot make for you, and how someone who does this for a living thinks them through.

Picking the waste band honestly
Waste is where takeoffs go wrong in both directions. A cut-up roof estimated at 10 percent runs short on the last courses, and a return trip for two bundles from a different dye lot can show as a visible color band. A simple gable at 20 percent buys bundles that sit in the garage for a decade. Count the features: no hips or valleys means 10 percent, a hip roof or one or two valleys means 15, multiple hips plus dormers and valleys means 20 or slightly more. When in doubt on a complex roof, round the waste up, not down: leftover full bundles are returnable at most suppliers, a color-mismatched patch is forever.
Tear-off versus overlay
The IRC allows up to two layers of asphalt shingles, so a single-layer roof can legally be overlaid, and the ledger's tear-off line going to zero is tempting. Most pros tear off anyway, and for good reasons: an overlay hides deck rot and bad flashing that then live under the new roof, it telegraphs every bump through the new shingles, it adds real weight, it usually shortens the warranty, and the NEXT reroof pays double disposal. Overlay is defensible on a young, flat, single-layer field being recovered for cosmetic reasons; almost everywhere else the tear-off line belongs in the budget.
Synthetic versus felt underlayment
Synthetic costs more per roll but covers about 10 squares to felt's 4 (#15) or 2 (#30), so per square it is usually cheaper, far lighter to carry up a ladder, does not wrinkle in dew or tear off in wind if the roof sits exposed for a week, and is what most crews now run. Felt still makes sense on a strict budget, on small jobs where one roll covers everything, and under some tile and shake systems that specify it. If the job will not be shingled the same day it is dried in, synthetic is the safer call.
When a low-slope section should stop being shingles
The code allows shingles down to 2/12 with doubled underlayment, but allowed is not the same as smart. On a porch, a dormer, or an addition tying in at 2/12 to 3/12, water moves slowly and wind pushes it uphill under the tabs; the doubled underlayment is the code hedging against exactly that. A membrane or a sealed-lap metal panel on that one section typically outlives the shingle field around it. When this tool doubles your underlayment, read it as a prompt to price the alternative for that section, not just to buy more felt.
Ordering everything from one dye lot
Shingle color varies slightly batch to batch, which is invisible in a wrapper and obvious on a roof. Order the full bundle count, including the waste allowance, in one purchase from one lot, and have the supplier confirm the lot numbers match. This is the practical reason to trust the rounded-up count rather than buying tight and topping up later: the top-up is the patch you will see from the street for twenty years.

Common mistakes, and the fix

  • Ordering from the footprint area without the pitch factor.

    The footprint is the roof's horizontal shadow; the material lies on the slope. Multiply by the pitch factor first: at 6/12 the real surface is 12 percent bigger than the footprint, at 9/12 it is 25 percent bigger, at 12/12 it is 41 percent. Skipping the factor is how a 60-bundle roof gets ordered as 48.

  • Assuming starter and ridge cap come out of the field bundles on an architectural roof.

    With old 3-tab you could cut starter courses and ridge caps from field shingles. Architectural shingles are laminated and cannot be cut into caps, so starter strip and ridge cap are separate purchases: starter at about 105 lf per bundle along eaves and rakes, cap at about 25 lf per bundle along ridges and hips. Budget both lines or discover them at the counter.

  • Applying the waste percentage to the linear accessories.

    Waste covers area cuts in the field material. Drip edge, starter, ridge cap, and ice and water shield are bought by measured edge length and already round up to whole sticks, bundles, and rolls; adding 15 percent on top double-counts. This tool applies waste to shingles and underlayment only.

  • Measuring eave to eave with the overhangs, then adding the overhang again.

    Decide once what your footprint means. If you measured the roof's horizontal extent at the eaves, the overhang is already in it. If you used wall-to-wall dimensions from plans or records, add roughly twice the overhang to each direction first. Mixing the two either double-counts the overhang or drops it entirely, and on a 2 ft overhang around a whole house that is real square footage.

  • Assuming every shingle line is 3 bundles per square.

    Standard 3-tab and most architectural lines are 3 bundles per square at about 33.3 sq ft per bundle, which is what this tool uses. Premium triple-laminate and designer lines can run 4 or even 5 bundles per square at 20 to 25 sq ft each. Check the wrapper's coverage figure before converting a premium order, or the bundle count will be short by a third.

  • Skipping the second underlayment layer on a 2/12 to 4/12 roof.

    From 2/12 to just under 4/12, the 2021 IRC (R905.1.1) requires two layers of underlayment under asphalt shingles because water sheds slowly at that slope. This tool doubles the roll count automatically in that band and tells you it did. Single-layering a 3/12 porch roof is a leak with a schedule.

Material and unit specifics

The roofing square
One square is 100 sq ft of roof surface, and it is the unit the entire trade speaks: quotes, scope sheets, labor rates, and coverage figures all come per square. A 17.9 square roof is 1,790 sq ft of sloped surface. When you compare anything roofing, convert to squares first and the numbers line up.
Bundle coverage by shingle line
A bundle is the unit shingles ship in, sized so a person can carry it up a ladder. Standard 3-tab and most architectural lines: 3 bundles per square, about 33.3 sq ft per bundle. Premium triple-laminate and designer shingles: 4 to 5 bundles per square, 20 to 25 sq ft each. Hip and ridge cap bundles are their own product at about 25 lf per bundle, and starter strip runs about 105 lf per bundle. The tool's counts use the standard 3-per-square figure.
Underlayment roll coverage
Synthetic underlayment typically covers about 10 squares per roll, #15 felt about 4 squares, #30 felt about 2. The layer count is a code matter: one layer at 4/12 and steeper, two layers from 2/12 to under 4/12 with asphalt shingles (2021 IRC R905.1.1). Metal panel systems typically run one layer of synthetic; the panel manufacturer's instructions govern.
IRC slope minimums and the ice barrier
The 2021 IRC sets prescriptive floors: asphalt shingles need 2/12 (R905.2.2), lapped metal panels without sealant 3/12, sealed laps 1/2 in 12, standing seam 1/4 in 12. Where the local code official designates a history of ice damming, an ice barrier (ice and water shield) is required at the eaves, extending from the edge to at least 24 in inside the exterior wall line (R905.1.2). All of it is national guidance that local amendments can tighten, so confirm with your building department.
What maps to a real cart
Shingles are usually bought locally so the dye lots match and delivery goes to the driveway. The rest of the takeoff maps cleanly to stocked items at Home Depot or Lowe's: synthetic underlayment rolls, 10 ft drip edge sticks, ice and water shield rolls (about 65 lf x 3 ft), coil roofing nails by the pound or box, and bagged roofing screws for metal. Take the counts from the ledger and the cart builds itself.
Fasteners: 4-nail, 6-nail, and screws
The standard pattern is 4 nails per shingle, about 2.5 lb of coil nails per square. High-wind regions and many manufacturer high-wind warranties specify 6 nails per shingle, about 3.75 lb per square, and the toggle in this tool reprices that. Exposed-fastener metal runs roughly 80 screws per square, driven snug through the flats per the panel maker's pattern; over-driving dimples the panel and under-driving leaves the washer proud.

Reading your result

The squares figure is the roof's size in the trade's own unit, and it is the first number to check against any quote or scope sheet: if a bid prices 24 squares and this page computes 20, ask about the difference before discussing anything else, because every other line scales from it. The bundle count is a purchase order, deliberately rounded up to whole bundles; the leftover note tells you how much coverage the rounding bought, and leftover full bundles are worth keeping for ridge repairs or returning unopened. The accessory rows are separate purchases, not extras a supplier is padding in: starter, cap, drip edge, and ice barrier appear on every professional order sheet. Read the cost ledger as a floor for materials at your edited prices, and the labor line as the honest wide range it is: $350 to $600 or more per square installed, moved by region, stories, pitch, tear-off, and access. A bid inside the range with a square count that matches yours is a bid worth negotiating details on; a bid far outside either number is a bid worth questioning.

Limitations

  • Footprint mode treats the roof as uniform planes at one pitch. Turrets, curves, mixed pitches, and big cutouts need the plane-by-plane mode or a real on-roof measurement.
  • Waste bands are planning estimates. An extremely cut-up roof can exceed 20 percent, and a straight gable ranch crew that reuses offcuts can beat 10.
  • Prices are editable defaults, not live quotes; local prices, dye-lot availability, and delivery change the total. The labor range is national and wide by design.
  • Code figures are 2021 IRC prescriptive guidance. Local amendments and manufacturer instructions govern, and both can be stricter; confirm with your building department.

  • The metal mode covers exposed-fastener and similar panel systems by coverage width; standing seam with custom pans, trim packages, and clip systems needs a supplier takeoff.
